Viktor Troicki was the toast of Serbia as he thrashed Frances Michael Llodra in the decisive game to give the home side their debut Davis Cup tennis win.
Troicki came in for the higher-ranked Janko Tipsarevic with the tie level at 2-2 and played brilliantly to beat Llodra convincingly 6-2 6-2 6-3 in the Serbian capital Belgrade.
World number three Novak Djokovic had earlier showed his class when he brought Serbia level with a 6-2 6-2 6-4 win over Frances Gael Monfils.
Serbia, who are ranked 13th in the tennis world, clinched the Davis Cup title for the first time in its inception in 1900 and were thrilled with the win.
Skipper Bodan Obradovic said, “My players showed that they are mentally the strongest team in the world. We showed we are number one.”
And Frances captain Guy Gorget admitted that Troicki was the difference between the two teams on the final day of tennis. “We had expected two difficult matches today, but what we didn’t expect was that Viktor would be so good.”
Serbia only made their Davis Cup tennis debut in 1995 and both Djokovic and Obradovic had said before the final that victory would be the greatest achievement in the nations short sporting history.
The Serbs went into the final day trailing 2-1 but a fervent crowd of over 16,000 at the Belgrade Arena roared the team on for a clinical final days tennis to send the country into raptures as they savoured a much-deserved victory in the final major tennis tournament of the year.
